The Ruth K. Broad Bay Harbor Elementary School opened in 1995. It was a replacement for the school that had been there since the incorporation of the town of Bay Harbor Islands.
Ruth was the wife of Shepard Broad who was the original financier of the Islands. They moved to the island in 1940 and began building the islands out of swampland. Shepard decided to name the school after his wife because she was a big proponent of education and children. The Broad children Morris and Ann are very active within the school that holds their mothers name. Ruth K. Broad Bay Harbor is the only elementary school located on the island of Bay Harbor. It is a primary school with grades from preschool to sixth grade.
Bay Harbor is a part of the Miami Dade County. This is their first year being part of the Miami Dade County school district. There are a total of 1353 students with a teacher match of 50/50 male to female. There are 81 teachers. With a small school setting the staff and teachers are able to focus on the students and allow them to grow. By establishing good study skills these children have continued to perform well as they continue on throughout school.
The breakdown of the students is 24 kids enrolled in the preschool 191 in Kindergarten and the remaining grades have an average of 200 students each. The student ratio is 1:17. The school provides a great start to the education of students. Currently the school is rated A by the State of Florida. For the past nine years the school has maintained a focus on academics and achieved a superior rating. This provides an excellent basis for the children as they continue on throughout the Bay Harbor schools.
When considering a move to Bay Harbor youll find that it is actually two islands. The west island is exclusively single family homes and great for those looking to raise a family on the islands. The east island consists mostly of businesses but also includes multifamily housing as well.
